Many people have called 1 Corinthians 13 in the Bible the Love Chapter. Let’s find out why.
The first few verses in this chapter state that though I speak the tongues of men and of the angels; I have the gift of prophecy; I understand all mysteries and all knowledge along with faith, but if I do not have love, I am nothing.
Love or charity suffers long and is kind. There is no heartlessness to a people who are loving. Love causes one to be humble and does not puff up.
Love never fails. Why does it never fail? Because God is love (1 John 4:8).
I am nothing without God who is love.
1 John 4:9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. 10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but He loved us, and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
What is the love of God toward us? Jesus! For in John 3:16 it is written, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through Him might be saved.
God loved His creation of mankind so much that He sent His Son Jesus to save them from the devil and his works. Let’s continue in 1 John 4.
1 John 4:11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.
This is a commandment from Jesus in Mark:
Mark 12:29 And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord: 30 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. 31 And the second is like namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. There is none other commandment greater that these.
Another version of the above verse:
Matthew 22:37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. 40 On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.
Jesus commanded us to love God first. Then love others as we love ourselves. We need to love all three in order to follow Jesus’ commandment. Let’s continue.
1 John 4:12 No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and His love is perfected in us. 13 Hereby know we that we dwell in Him, and He in us, because He hath give us of HIs Spirit.
If we love each other then God the Holy Spirit resides in us.
14 And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the son to be the Savior of the world. 15 Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God. 16 And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.
Because God is love, anyone who dwells in love also dwells in God and God in him.
17 Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as He is, so are we in this world. 18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth not made perfect in love.
There is no fear in love (which is God). The opposite of fear is faith; the belief or trust in God. Perfect love (God) will cast out fear from us, thus making us perfect in love.
19 We love him, because He first loved us. 20 If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother who he hath seen, how can he love God who he hath not seen? 21 And this commandment have we from Him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.
1 John 5:1 Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth Him, also that is begotten of Him. 2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep His commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments: and His commandments are not grievous.
What is Love? God is love who sent His Son Jesus to be our Savior from this evil world. We are then commanded to love God, ourselves, and others. If we do these commandments from Jesus then the Holy Spirit dwells within us. He will make us perfect in love that cast out fear. These commandments that we should do are not grievous to us. Therefore let us love God, ourselves, and each other as we are commanded. This is what love should be.
