Leviticus 23:26 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:  27 Also the tenth day of this seventh month shall be the Day of Atonement. It shall be a holy convocation for you: you shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire to the Lord. 28 And you shall do no work on that same day, for it is the Day of Atonement, to make atonement for you before the Lord your God. 29 For any person who is not afflicted in soul on that same day shall be cut off from his people. 30 And any person who does any work on that same day that person I will destroy from among his people. 31 You shall do no manner of work; it shall be a statute forever throughout your generations in all your dwellings. 32 It shall be to you a sabbath of solemn rest, and you shall afflict your souls: on the ninth day of the month at evenin, from evening to evening, you shall celebrate your sabbath.

The Day of Atonement is considered the most holy day of the Jewish year. It occurs 10 Tishri in the seventh month of the religious year. In the Georgian calendar year it occurs in September or October. It is a holy convocation. It is the Sabbath of Sabbaths.

Day of Atonement is considered as Judgment Day for Israel. It is the day when Moses came back down the last time from Mount Sinai and told Israel that God forgave them for the Golden Calf idolatry worship. The covenant with God was renewed.

Numbers 29:7-11 discusses the Offerings for the Day of Atonement.

In Leviticus16:1-34, the Day of Atonement was the only day of the year when the High Priest of Israel was allowed into the Most Holy Place behind the veil. He was to wear white linen clothing when he went into the Most Holy Place. The High Priest took one of the golden censers from the Lampstand, filled it with coals of fire from the Altar of Incense that stood before the holy Veil, and then picked up some incense from the cups on the border of the Table of Showbread. Passing behind the Veil, he threw the incense on the glowing coals, causing the holy perfume to fill the Most Holy Place.

Then the anointed high priest went in before the Mercy Seat, which was called the Propitiatory. It was the  Lid of Atonement or the Lid of Reconciliation that was placed on the Ark of the Covenant. It was sprinkled with the blood of the sin offering for his own sins and his household. Then he left and returned with blood for the sins of the people of Israel.

This atonement was made for the holy sanctuary, for the Tabernacle of the Congregation, for the Altar, for the priests, and for all the people of the congregation It cleansed everything for the next year. Also, a scapegoat bearing the sins of the people was led away into a “land not inhabited.”

This ceremony was done each year on Day of Atonement.

Leviticus 16:20-22 And when he has made an end of atoning the holy place, the tabernacle of meeting, and the altar, he shall bring the live goat: 21 Aaron shall lay both his hands on the head of the live goat, confess over it all the iniquities of the children of Israel, and all their transgressions concerning all their sins, putting them on the head of the goat, and shall send it away into the wilderness by the hand of a suitable man. 22 The goat shall bear on itself all their iniquities to an uninhabited land: and he shall release the goat in the wilderness.

Hebrews 9:24 For Christ has not entered the holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us; 25 not that He should offer Himself often, as the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood of another- 20 He then would have had to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but now, once at the end of the ages, He has appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself/.

Hebrews 10:3 But in those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year. 4For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins.

The sprinkling of blood cleanses the Tabernacle or Temple of sin and the impurities of the sins of the people. This was done once a year on the Day of Atonement in the Old Testament. But in the ear of the New Testament. The sprinkling of blood is no longer needed. For the Lamb of God was crucified, and His Blood was sprinkled on the Mercy Seat of the heavenly Temple. It speaks of a better Covenant

The Day of Atonement where one was to afflict the soul with a fast. This fast was no food or drink but still joyous for 25 hours; evening to evening. Thus we are cleansing of our earthly Temples.

The true Fast is described in Isaiah 58:6  Is this not the fast that I have chosen: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, to let the oppressed go free, and that you break every yoke? 7 Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and that you bring to your house the poor who are cast out: when you see the naked that you cover him and not hide yourself from your own flesh? 8 Then your light shall break forth like the morning, your healing shall spring forth speedily, and your righteousness shall go before you; the glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard. 9 Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer; you shall cry, and He will say, Here I am.
